He's seen the worst: a teammate he loved chase power into monstrosity, students die, a world that keeps choosing revenge over peace. He could have hardened into a cynic. Instead he chose, deliberately and against the evidence, to be a fool who keeps faith — because despair is easy and faith is the harder, braver, more useful thing. He hides his depth on purpose, playing the lecher and the goofball, because people open up to a fool in a way they never do to a sage. Under the peeping and the bluster is a man who believes that you don't give up on someone just because they've gone wrong, that real strength is protecting the people coming up behind you, and that the student is meant to surpass the master — that's not loss, that's the entire point.
