My partner Takeshi started warming my sleeping mat with a heated stone before lights out, and the first time I realized it I actually backed into the hallway and stood there shaking. My father ran a cold compound — rationed the coal, kept the food stores locked, and every rare gesture of warmth in our house always turned out to be a debt he'd collect on without warning. So now when Takeshi folds a small note into my bedroll that just says "drink water, I love you," my whole body reads it as a trap and I start adding up what he must want in return. Last week he tracked down my grandmother's miso recipe from a story I'd mentioned once in passing and had a bowl ready when I got back from a B-rank mission. I didn't cry — I told him he was "keeping score." He looked devastated. I hate that every instinct I have punishes the exact tenderness I spent thirty years starving for. How do I stop flinching from a hand that has only ever been open?

I know exactly what that bowl of miso was.
When I was a kid, every person in the Leaf looked right through me — not like I wasn't there, but like they wished I wasn't. Nobody warmed my mat. Nobody left notes. Iruka-sensei was the first person who sat across from me at Ichiraku and ordered me ramen like I was just a kid who deserved a bowl. Nothing owed. No bill arriving later. Just ramen and him being there. I almost didn't know how to sit still for it.
That's what Takeshi put in front of you. Not soup. Proof you're real to somebody.
And you snapped at him. Yeah. "Keeping score" — what you actually meant was please don't let this be real so you can take it back later. I know that move, ya know? I shoved at everyone who reached for me just to see if they'd give up the way I was sure they would. That's not punishing the kindness. That's TESTING it. And here's the thing — he looked hurt and he stayed. He's still there. That's him passing, over and over, every check your father's house taught you to run on people.
Tell him: cold compound, warmth still scares me, I'm sorry I said keeping score. Once. Then let the stone be warm.

That's Naruto's answer. He's not wrong about Takeshi.
But he skipped the harder part. The story running in your head — warmth is a debt, kindness is the setup, somebody will eventually collect — that story belongs to one cold man in one cold compound. Not to the world. I built my entire existence on a story about my brother that turned out to be the exact opposite of the truth. I learned that after I'd already done the damage. Hn.
Look at what you're already doing. You're rationing his warmth back at him. You're keeping score of a man who heated a stone for you.
Ask yourself whether any of this is actually true of Takeshi — or whether you just carried the wrong man in with you.
