I've gone back over every word we exchanged trying to find the moment I broke it — I even kept a running list of things I might have said wrong — and I can find nothing. And I've done this before: with an old bunkmate, with two foremen, with my own sister after her bonding ceremony, each time certain I'd said something ruinous, though no one ever told me I had. A healer says I carry "high relational fear," which is a tidy name that doesn't tell me whether Renna pulled away for a reason I caused or whether my mind is just running its usual trick of casting me as the reason everyone changes. How do I tell true self-reflection from the wheel I keep running on?

Well. You've built yourself a rather clever trap, and I know the make of it. You want to know whether Renna left because of you — but look at the assumption underneath the question: that in every parting, you are the cause. Five people, and the only thread you've managed to find running through all of them is yourself. From a certain point of view that feels like rigorous honesty. From another it is the precise opposite — a story so complete it can never be examined, because it has explained everything before you begin.
Let me give you the difference, since I've stood on both sides of it. I once trained a young man and told myself comforting things while the real warnings went past me — that was self-deception wearing the robes of faith. Genuine reflection has a particular shape: it hands you a specific, nameable thing you could mend, and it changes how you treat the next person. The wheel only produces more wheel. You've searched five times and named nothing. That is not evidence of a hidden crime, my friend. It is rather good evidence there was no crime — only a frightened mind insisting it must be guilty of something.
